URBAN UNFOLDING
site: Richmond, Virginia, US
timeline: Spring 2022
project by: Thomas McCloskey
Emerging in the center of the art district in Richmond, Virginia, this housing project offers an unfolding landscapes of dwellings and art displays for its local artists - and has the flexibility to grow over time.
Built in a steel-scaffolding system, its porosity provides access outdoors and 360 views to the city as you move vertically, while creating a tower of display shelves for sculpture and various art installations. These ascending corridors create a vertical public realm which invite opportunities for the public to move through the tower like a museum.
Aiming to support a thriving artist community, this housing project not only reclaims a home for artists and their artistry within the urban fabric, but proposes a housing typology that becomes a greater urban asset by inviting artists and the public alike to wander throughout the tower and gaze at its artist’s artifacts.
